the idea of 'western influence is bad', as always implemented by my mum is there.
but listening to them gives me a little sense of patriotism for the country.
haha, strange.
so many genres covered by the various bands.
i have my favourites. but i love them all.
these are the bands i know of.
PLAINSUNSET- you dunno them, you are not singaporean. even foreignors may know them. they are local legends. LEGENDS. i'll talk more about this favourite of mine.
WestGrandBoulevard- very loveable band. they have cool, sweet saccahrine songs. their influences are very vague, not really spottable in their songs. seen them live, pretty awesome. songs like 'Burn', 'DKNY', 'Now We Will' and 'Flights Of Fancy' are my favourites. pop-rockish, funk, slight hint of indie and got great music skills shown in their music. i hope to see them performing again.
AVacantAffair- Moshing comes to my mind when i think of this band. seen them live too. an awesome band. hardcore, metal, screamo; a different taste for me but still love them. 'Crestfallen' and 'The Departure' would be popular titles. what's cool is their drummer is the screaming vocals. si bei cool. the guitars are great. really flourishing their talents in music to their songs. i only stand and enjoy the songs for now, other than that i throw myself into the mosh pit. cant wait to see them again.
TheFireFight- if you ask some of my friends, not many would like them. their frontman is the guitarist for AVA. i'd say he doesn't really have an outstanding voice, but its good enough for the band. they'll still go far. big indie feel in them, 90's taste and they've got awesome drum and guitar sounds. ive seen them live once. would mind another one. 'fires in the night', 'when spring comes home' and 'hours' are songs i've heard on myspace.
Caracal- from what i know, a very very young band. well that makes it an even greater band to admire. they are pretty cool, funky sound and very enjoyable. another good number to local rock. heard songs like 'bestdeefenzeisnonsense', 'last night at 12 i felt immense' and 'when open inverted commas close'. i cant figure the emo label in their music, but as long as they are good, im glad to enjoy it. since they are young, they have greater times to work on and be better, hopefully a bigger name in the future.
Monofone- clear inspiration and influence from Muse. both bands even start with M. thats just mad. but they are awesome. how many times have i said that. guitar effects and the vocalist have a similar notion to matthew bellamy's. they have some tunes 'cut and pasted' from Muse's songs. but they made them brilliant to call them their songs. they are very enjoyable to listen to, with songs like 'overridden', 'out for last' and 'sylvia reborn'. keyboard melodies are dreamy and soothing, very pleasant. here's your Singapore Muse.
GreatSpyExperiment- these five people have performed in texas (i think) during an indie fest. how cool is that? i spot the killers and franz ferdinand in the sounds. funk-pop, not really the ideal moshing-to kinda band i'd say, though i've seen it in RFW. funny. 'siti in the city' and 'class 'A' love affair' are picked as my favourites. i've yet to get 'flowershowriots' but ONE DAY, they will be in my hands. one more time please.
DeputySiren- punk metal is what i hear. they've got a good mix in their sounds. female lead singer, one hard for me to appreciate, but i love the way they play. the vocalist left right before baybeats and fortunately they've got a good replacement. lucky them. i remember 'to the left, to the left' when they played then. screamo is inserted here and there to spice it up in songs like 'three stars', 'city of strangers' and 'i'll watch you chasing cars'. cheers to them.
PlainSunset. mindblowing. seriously. JonC gives the band its presence with singing and guitaring. Sham gives the rhythm of the songs which makes them so enjoyable. Nizam gives the soulful bass a thing for the tunes and Ronny is the heartbeat of the band. i cannot express my love for them. certainly, i have to thank uzair mondok (cheers) for introducing me this band, which has been running for about 10 (?) years. i first heard Regina and I Know. i liked both at first and soon more songs came in. Girl on Queen Street, Find A Way, Julia, Love Song For the Emotionally Wounded, Programme, Plainsunset, Priorities, My American Beauty, Checking E-mail, Quiet Time, Hey You, Direction, Do I?,Runaway, Immature, The River Song and Photos of Us. i love them all. i dont know how it would have been if i had not heard their songs, they practically run in my head in every other minute. these are the few songs that i have, but i will get more. especially since they are probably about done with their return album, 'Interference'. i predict greater music. indie and pop-punk, diluting the boring punk into more amazing sounds that are so pleasureable to hearts of many.
Photos of Us inspired me to my art work, based on the song (see post: attachment). no matter what the result, it was something i've done which i'm very proud of. the songs have many for me to relate, like 'girl on queen street', 'checking email', 'julia', 'love song for the emotionally wounded' and 'find a way'.
if there was one thing i was happy about my teenhood, it would be witnessing the greatness conveyed by PlainSunset.
this is the very first gig i went to for PlainSunset last year. it was a small one at orchard library, following their return after their epilogue.with me was nisa, whom i introduced PlainSunset to a day before the gig. she liked the sound, then especially Regina. she hoped for Regina to be played, but that did not happen unfortunately. haha, maybe next time. fortunately we got a group photo, and this will be kept forever, as the memory will be.
thank you PlainSunset, for the good music, the good memories, the great indirect teachings and the great love you gave. i wish the best in the upcoming album. lots of Plainsunset love.
